Definition of Statistics.

A lot of definitions of Statistics are available in different text books. Many statisticians have defined it in different ways. Here we will look and different definitions by different scholars and will pick one of the best among them.



R.A. Fisher: Statistics is a branch of applied mathematics which specializes in data.

A.M. Mood: Statistics provides tools and techniques for research workers.

W.A. Wallis and H.V. Roberts: Statistics is not a body of substantive knowledge, but a body of methods obtaining knowledge.

Cecil H. Meyers: Statistics may be defined as a science numerical information which employs the processes of measurement and collection, classic fiction, analysis, decision making and communication of results in a manner understandable and verifiable by other.

A.L. Bowely: great numbers are not counted correctly to a unit, they are estimated.

William A. Spurr and Charles P. Bonini: Not all numbers are statistical. Logarithms, for instance, are mere abstract numbers. Statistical data are concrete numbers, which represent objects.

The definition given by R.A Fisher is considered to be best and most exact.
