What is Statistics?

People view statistic in many different ways. Generally, it is considered to be a subject that deals with percentage, chart, graph, averages, and tables. Some people think that Statistics is a subject consisting of rules, methods, and technique of collecting and presenting a large amount of numerical information. While other people think that it is a subject of making inference about their population on the basis of sample information.
The word statistic which comes from Latin word status, meaning a political state, originally mean information useful to the state, for example, information about the sizes of the population and armed forces. But this word has now acquried new meaning.
In the first place, the word statistics refers to "numerical words systemetically arranged". In this sense,the word statictic is always used in the plural. We have, for instance, the statistic of price, statistics of road accidents, statistics of crime, statistics of birth, statistics of educational institutes, etc. In all these examples, the word statistics denotes a set of numerical data in respective fields. this is the meaning the man in the street gives to the word Statistics and most people used the word Data instead.
